Sentinel is a convenient all-in-one heartworm, intestinal wormer and flea product given monthly as a flavoured tablet.
WHAT IS SENTINEL SPECTRUM?
Sentinel Spectrum is a monthly parasite protection solution that covers not only all of the intestinal worms, including tapeworm, but will also protect your dog against heartworm. There is also an added insect growth regulator to stop fleas from laying viable eggs.
Sentinel is fantastic for households with children, when you are reluctant to use messy chemical top-spots. The easy-to-administer flavoured chew is simply given as a treat or hidden in food to protect your pet from all those parasites of concern to your family.
Sentinel is safe, effective and convenient, what more could we ask for? Made by the trusted Novartis Animal Health, it has been thoroughly safety tested to ensure it is suitable for any breed of dog, including Collies. It can even be given in pregnant dogs and puppies from 6 weeks of age.
We love Sentinel because it actually includes an ingredient that other combined products don’t. This added ingredient, praziquantel effectively prevents tapeworm infection in dogs that eat raw meat or forage.
HOW DOES SENTINEL SPECTRUM WORK?
Sentinel Spectrum contains 3 active ingredients. The milbemycin oxime effectively and safety kills roundworm, hookworm, whipworm and heartworm when given month.
The praziquantel is the vital tapeworm killer that many other combined products do not contain. Tapeworm is usually contracted through foraging, hunting or eating raw meats, but can also be contracted through ingesting fleas while grooming.
Lufenuron stops flea eggs from developing, so any fleas on your pet will not repopulate, effectively breaking the flea lifecycle. For many pets, this type of flea control is enough, but should you see large numbers of adult fleas, it is safe to use Advantage, Frontline or Comfortis with your Sentinel Spectrum.
WHEN SHOULD YOU USE SENTINEL SPECTRUM?
This product is designed for monthly use. If you have not already been giving a heartworm treatment to your pet, please consult with your veterinarian before starting Sentinel. Giving your pet a heartworm preventative when they are heartworm positive can be dangerous and cause a shock-like reaction.
Sentinel Spectrum is safe to use in dogs from 6 weeks of age.
This product is also safe for Collie breeds with ivermectin sensitivity and is registered for use in breeding males and females. It is safe for use during pregnancy.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING SENTINEL SPECTRUM?
- If your dog is 0-4 kg you need Sentinel Spectrum Orange
- If your dog is 4-11 kg you need Sentinel Spectrum Green
- If your dog is 11-22 kg you need Sentinel Spectrum Yellow
- If your dog is 22-45kg you need Sentinel Spectrum Blue
- If your dog is over 45kg, use a combination of the above for your dog’s weight.
When you purchase Sentinel ensure the packaging is sealed and free from damage. Check the expiry date to ensure you have at least 6 months to use the product that remains in the box.
WHERE CAN YOU BUY SENTINEL?
Sentinel Spectrum for Dogs can be purchased from vet clinics, pet shops or online, including the Love That Pet Store. The online prices for products are generally cheaper, however you will need to take into account the postage costs and return policies.
WHAT ELSE DO YOU NEED?
If you live in a tick area, use Advantix or Frontline Plus fortnightly for paralysis ticks in addition to or instead of your monthly Sentinel Spectrum.
If you live in a warm climate with lots of pesky fleas, perhaps use Advantage, Frontline Plus or Comfortis in addition to your Sentinel, even if just for the summer period. While Sentinel does have an ingredient known as an insect growth regulator in it, the product will not kill adult fleas.
