Comfortis for Dogs: A Pet Parent’s Guide

By Dr Eloise Bright 4 Min Read

Comfortis is the fastest acting flea treatment on the market killing fleas in just 4 hours. It has the added benefit of coming in flavoured, chewable tablets that your dog will love.

WHAT IS COMFORTIS?

Comfortis is a beef flavoured chew that starts killing fleas within 30 minutes, with 100% of fleas dead within 4 hours. You do not need to worry about bathing or swimming with Comfortis, it is not washed off and is effective for the entire month.

Many dogs with flea allergies have a severe sensitivity to flea saliva, so using Comfortis with its rapid speed of kill gives them relief fast. Just one flea bite can cause dermatitis and itching for up to 2 weeks in an allergic pet. Comfortis is formulated from a new, unique ingredient that works fast and effectively and is very safe for you and your dogs.

If your dog is receiving Ivermectin, such as for off-label tick treatment or for treatment of demodex or mange, please consult with your Veterinarian before using Comfortis.

Comfortis is safe to use from 14 weeks of age. Comfortis is safe to use in households with cats.

HOW DOES COMFORTIS WORK?

Comfortis is orally administered and should be given with food. The active component is spinosad, which kills fleas quickly, before they can lay any eggs. It does not leave any residue on your pet and is safe to use around children and cats. You do not need to isolate your pet or avoid patting your pet after application, unlike other top spot medications.

WHEN SHOULD YOU USE COMFORTIS?

Comfortis should be used monthly. It may be necessary to use year-round flea treatments in Australia, unless you live in a particularly cold area. The flea lifecycle means that after feeding a flea can lay 50 eggs per day, so even just a small number of fleas can grow and act as a source of reinfestation for another 9 months.

WHAT SIZE COMFORTIS DO I NEED FOR MY DOG?

When you purchase Comfortis ensure the packaging is sealed and free from damage. Check the expiry date to ensure you have at least 6 months to use the Comfortis in that box.

WHAT SHOULD I LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING COMFORTIS?

  • Check the expiry date.
  • Ensure the packaging is sealed and free from damage.
  • Ensure you have the correct weight for your dog and purchase the correct dose. Do not split vials or doses.

WHERE CAN I BUY COMFORTIS?

Comfortis for Dogs can be purchased from vet clinics, pet shops or online, including the Love That Pet Store. The online prices for products are generally cheaper, however you will need to take into account the postage costs and return policies.

If you have never used Comfortis before and your pet is elderly or on other medications, please consult with your Veterinarian before using this product. The main known interaction is with off-label use of ivermectin (such as for treatment of ticks or mites).

WHAT ELSE DO YOU NEED?

If you live in a tick area, use Advantix or Frontline fortnightly for paralysis ticks in addition to or instead of your Comfortis.

You will also need a monthly heartworm treatment and quarterly intestinal wormer. You can use a combined product such as Interceptor that does both heartworm and intestinal worms when used monthly.
