Profender for Cats: A Pet Parent’s Guide

By Dr Eloise Bright 3 Min Read

Profender is a unique broad spectrum top spot medication that effectively kills intestinal parasites in cats, including tapeworm.

WHAT IS IT?

Profender is excellent for cats that are difficult to medicate with worming tablets and pastes. It is simply administered on the back of the neck and absorbed systemically. Profender is safe to use from 8 weeks of age and should be used every 3 months.

Profender kills roundworms, tapeworms, and hookworms.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The active ingredients in Profender are emodepside which kills round worms and hookworms and praziquantel, which kills tapeworms. The medication is administered on the back of the neck like a flea top spot and is absorbed through the skin to paralyse and kill intestinal parasites in cats.

WHEN SHOULD YOU USE IT?

Profender is safe to use in kittens from 8 weeks of age and from 0.5kg in weight. It should be used every 3 months for life in combination with a flea treatment.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING PROFENDER?

Ensure that the product is sealed in its original packaging and the expiry date gives you plenty of time to use both doses.

If your cat is from 0.5-2.5 kg use Profender small cats (green)

If your cat is 2.5-5 kg use Profender medium cat (blue)

If your cat is from  5-8 kg use Profender large cats (red)

If your cat is over 8 kg, use an appropriate combination of packs to treat your cat.

WHERE TO BUY?

Profender is available over the counter at most pet shops, Veterinary clinics and through online stores. Online purchase is usually the cheapest , however you will need to pay a small delivery fee.

WHAT ELSE DO YOU NEED?

Profender does not cover heartworm or fleas. If you live in an area where heartworm is prevalent, it may be necessary to treat  your cat monthly for heartworm. Cats are not as susceptible to heartworm as dogs, but can still contract the disease in certain situations.

To treat fleas, it is recommended that you use Frontline Plus monthly in combination with Profender.
