Frontline Plus for Cats: A Pet Parent’s Guide

By Dr Eloise Bright 4 Min Read

Frontline Plus is a monthly parasite treatment for cats. It effectively treats fleas and is stored in the oily glands in the skin.

WHAT IS IT?

Frontline is used monthly to kill fleas. It is extremely safe and simply stored in the oily glands in the skin, rather than being systemically absorbed.

Frontline Plus is safe to use from 8 weeks of age. For young kittens Frontline spray can be used from 2 days of age.

Frontline Plus kills adult fleas and also effectively breaks the flea lifecycle with two active ingredients. It is effective for flea allergy dermatitis when used in conjunction with environmental flea control.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Frontline contains two active ingredients. It is the only flea product that kills all 4 stages of the flea life cycle.

Frontline Plus is applied to the back of the neck and rapidly distributes through the skin and is stored in the oily glands for one month. The two active ingredients kill adult fleas, flea larvae, pupae and flea eggs.

Frontline Plus is water fast 48 hours after application. If your cat has a bath more than weekly, it may become ineffective, but can be safely reapplied after 2 weeks.

WHEN SHOULD YOU USE IT?

In warmer climates it is necessary to treat your pet for fleas year-round. Fleas can lay 50 eggs per day, so an untreated pet can very quickly contaminate your yard and home with large numbers of flea eggs, which will act as a continuous source of reinfestation for up to 9 months.

For protection from paralysis ticks you should use Frontline spray every 3 weeks during tick season and tick search your pet daily just in case.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING FRONTLINE PLUS

Frontline Plus for cats is safe to use from 8 weeks of age, with one convenient size so there is no need to know the weight of your cat.

Ensure that the packaging is sealed and the tamper seal has not been breached. Each pack contains stickers to use on your calendar to ensure you never forget a dose. You can also set a reminder on your phone to ensure your Frontline Plus is up to date. One easy way to remember is to gradually align your treatment date to the start of the month, so it is easy to remember when your pet needs to be treated.

WHERE TO BUY?

Frontline Plus is available online, at Veterinary clinics or at pet stores. If you purchase online you will find cheaper prices, but you will need to closely examine the delivery fees and return policies.

WHAT ELSE DO YOU NEED?

Frontline covers your flea needs with one convenient product. You will just need to add in an intestinal wormer every 3 months such as Profender.
