World’s Ugliest Dogs
At Love That Pet we know that beauty comes in many forms. Dogs just don’t care what they look like and we could all learn something from that. The award for the World’s Ugliest Dog is not so much about poking fun as celebrating differences.
The tradition of the World’s Ugliest Dog title is a tongue-in-cheek celebration of the many unusual dogs with beautiful…personalities. The competition is staged at the Sonoma-Marin County Fair in Petaluma, California. These dogs are characters and while their looks are a little unusual, their spirits shine through in their portraits and many have gone on to star in movies and raise money for charities.
For many years the Chinese Crested was over-represented, but since then many dogs have taken out this prestigious title. Possibly the most well-known ugliest dog was Elwood, winner in 2007. He subsequently became the topic of a children’s book teaching acceptance and made over 200 public appearances to raise money for animal charities.
Rascal was the 2002 winner and the only dog from the UK to win this coveted prize. He was also Ring of Champions winner. He used his fame for good causes and also has a few horror movie roles to add to his resume.
There have been many worthy winners, but possibly the cutest, smallest winner was the aptly named Yoda, who won the crown in 2011. What a sweetheart!
And if she wasn’t cute enough for you, how about Nana, winner in 2000, then again in 2001. She ended up living until the ripe old age of 17 years. The owner would say “Canardly”, when asked what breed she was, as in “you can’ardly tell”.
Even though these dogs were pretty special, you just can’t go past Sam, who took out the title for 3 years running in 2003-2006, and some many say could have defended the title for many years to come. He was struck down with heart problems at 15 years of age. RIP beautiful Sam.
So do you know any ugly-beautiful dogs? We can think of a few very strange looking creatures, but of course they are all beautiful on the inside.
